What is THC-O?
THC-O, also known as “THC-O acetate,” is a THC compound said to be approximately three times more potent than Delta-9 THC, the most common THC compound on the market.
THC is the psychoactive compound in cannabis, meaning any type of this compound will get you high. The effects of THC-O are so intense that they’re described as almost psychedelic. If that sounds a little scary, don’t worry; much like Delta-8 THC, THC-O is known to have anti-anxiety and anti-nausea properties.
THC-O is a hemp-derived synthetic compound created by combining Delta-8 THC molecules with acetic anhydride, a chemical compound that comes in liquid form. Note that this chemical compound is dangerous to handle independently and shouldn’t be used outside of a lab.
THC-O is most commonly used in concentrated products such as vape cartridges and edibles.
While the THC-O trend is pretty recent, the compound has been around for a while. The U.S. government was reported to have been experimenting with it as far back as the late 1940s. THC-O briefly popped up on the DEA’s radar in the 1970s when they found it being manufactured in Florida but was it was quickly forgotten as it didn’t prove to be widespread.
At this time, there still is not much official research on the effects of THC-O. Almost everything we know about it comes from user reviews.
Is THC-O Legal?
Due to the 2018 United States Farm Bill phrasing, which dictates that all hemp-derived products containing less than 0.3 percent Delta-9 THC are legal, THC-O is technically legal on the federal level.
It is still legal in the majority of states because state lawmakers have not yet caught wind of its popularity. However, considering how strong it is, more local governments are likely to target THC-O’s distribution in the possibly near future.
Even with THC-O products being technically legal, you should check the laws in your state as they could change at any time, and only purchase them from reputable and legal retailers like Dimo Hemp.
