Delta-8 THC Drug Test: Will Smoking D8 Make You Fail

by | Apr 25, 2022

Smoking weed isn’t just a choice between Indica and Sativa anymore. Your options go beyond all of the different strains within those categories. Over time, more and more cannabinoids have caught up to Delta-9 THC in popularity; one of the favorites is Delta-8 THC. But the rapidly growing popularity of this less-potent cannabinoid inspires the question… does Delta-8 make you fail a drug test?

While the short answer is yes, we’ll get into the details of Delta-8 THC and how to prepare for an upcoming drug test, even if you have some in your system.

Intro to Delta-8 THC

When you pick up any standard THC product from a dispensary, you’re almost always getting Delta-9 THC. But, if you’re looking for something less potent than that, you might want to try Delta-8 THC.

Delta-8 is a great option for people who want a more mellow high and for people who tend to become paranoid from THC. When you consume products with Delta-8 THC rather than Delta-9, you will still experience the typical psychoactive effects of THC, but to a lesser degree. Many Delta-8 users report having the feelings of euphoria and relaxation that they know and love from Delta-9, but without the anxiety that can come with getting too high.

If that doesn’t sound good enough, the biggest appeal of Delta-8 THC is that it is technically legal at the federal level. According to the United States Farm Bill passed in 2018, cannabis products containing less than 0.3% Delta-9 THC are legal, which applies to Delta-8. But, please note the use of the word “technically” because the phrasing of this law was not exactly intended to permit the use of other psychoactive cannabinoids, and some state legislatures have already jumped on creating laws to combat what they view as an unintentional loophole.

Passing a Delta-8 THC Drug Test

While Delta-8 THC is technically federally legal, it will still show up as THC on a drug test, and there will be no differentiation between that and the illegal Delta-9 THC. So, if you’ve consumed some Delta-8 products recently, you may be failing your drug test.

How Long Does Delta-8 Stay in Your System?

While Delta-8 is less potent than Delta-9 regarding psychoactive effects, it stays in your system for roughly the same amount of time. Depending on the frequency of use and other factors such as BMI and lifestyle, Delta-8 will stay in your urine for a few days to a month. It will remain in your saliva for roughly seventy-two hours, your blood for about one day to two weeks under extreme circumstances, and it will stay in your hair for ninety days no matter what.

Reliable Ways to Detox from Delta-8 THC

If you have more than a month until your drug test, you should be fine to detox naturally. This just means that you can stop consuming cannabis products and other toxins entirely, allowing your body to begin breaking down built-up toxins and flush them all out in about thirty days on average.

You can increase the success of your detox by drinking lots of fluids (preferably water but tea and sugar-free cranberry juice are great as well). This will support your system and increase the amount of fluids exiting your body and carrying toxins out with them. Toxins can also escape through sweat, so it helps to exercise frequently and get into a sauna once or twice.

If you have less than a month before your drug test, you will need some help detoxing in time. With two weeks until your drug test, your best bet will be a 10-day detox program from which you will permanently cleanse your system.

You can still permanently cleanse your system on an even shorter timeline with a 5-day detox program if that is necessary. Even with this added help, take our advice on carrying out a natural detox, as it can only increase your success.

If you only have one day to prepare for a drug test, you can still be ready to pass in time by using a 24-hour detox kit. Unfortunately, this will not permanently cleanse your system, and the THC will become detectable again within about six hours of use. This is still a great option if you have a very tight deadline because, without a detox kit, there is no possible way for you to pass a drug test in just one day.

Closing Thoughts

Logically, it makes sense that Delta-8 would be less likely to make you fail a drug test. It is less potent, after all. But, unfortunately, it just doesn’t work that way.

If you’ve recently consumed Delta-8 or any THC, there will be some necessary measures to prepare for a drug test.
